FED: Tourism backs low cost international carrier

The tourism industry has backed Qantas' foray into budget international travel .. despite
concerns on the impact of its decision to scrap its Australian Airlines brand on far north
Queensland.

Subject to regulatory approval .. Qantas has announced its low cost subsidiary Jetstar
will become an international airline in November.

Jetstar is seeking approval to fly to Japan as well as the traditional outbound destinations
of Hawaii .. Indonesia .. Thailand and Vietnam.

Qantas has announced it will finish its Cairns-based Australian Airlines brand in July.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive ROB GIASON says the closure is bitterly
disappointing.
